Sculpture Baiser (aluminum and varnish)

It looks like meringues. In 2003 Stefan Kern created this sculpture from a continous aluminum tube lined up in different directions covered with pure white anti-graffiti varnish. The sculpture can be marvelled in the centre of the roundabout Wankelstraße/Zusestraße in Stuttgart-Vaihingen.

The severe, symmetrical and monochrome look is characteristical for the art works of Stefan Kern. The perfect and unblemished appearance of the object in pure white color of the meringue stands out apparently from its environment. The sculpture functions as a classical garden pavillion and melts together with the centre to a romantic picture taken from an Englisch garden setting.

The German artist Stefan Kern was born in Hamburg in 1966. After school Kern started his studies at Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, called „Städelschule” in Frankfurt. The first single expositions were taking place together with Hammehle and Ahrens in 1994. Art awards such as “junger westen 95″ and Ernst-Barlach-Preis in 1999 are ackowledging the work of the young artists.

Teaching as a guest lecturer at Kunsthochschule in Kassel and later at Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg as well as a professor at École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Straßburg are characterizing his academical path. Kern currently works and lives in Germany.

The artwork „Baiser” can be seen an a point of orientation and a distinguishing mark for the STEP-area – which makes it so special.
